Mets ace Max Scherzer has second rehab start pushed to Wednesday

New York Mets ace Max Scherzer was on track to make his second rehab start for Double-A Binghamton in Hartford on Tuesday as part of his recovery from the oblique strain that's kept him out of the rotation since May 18.

Scherzer's return to the bump will instead be delayed.

According to SNY and the official team website, Scherzer's next rehab appearance has been postponed. The three-time Cy Young Award winner will now start in Hartford on Wednesday evening.

No reason for the change was given.

"I'm trying to pitch and do rehab at the same time," Scherzer previously explained about not starting for the Mets at the Miami Marlins this past weekend after he pitched for Double-A Binghamton last Tuesday. "After that start, doing a core routine, doing a bullpen and doing a core routine -- it was a lot and I got a little sore. In order to pitch and to start [in the Majors] on Sunday, I was going to have to be perfect. ... I couldn't check that box."

Scherzer is 5-1 with a 2.54 ERA across eight starts this season.

Meanwhile, Mets right-hander Tylor Megill will be out until at least mid-August with a right shoulder strain he suffered on June 16. New York ace Jacob deGrom still hasn't notched a start this season due to a stress reaction in the scapula of his pitching shoulder but may debut around the All-Star break

It's not all bad news for the first-place Mets, though, as second baseman and utility man Jeff McNeil is returning for Tuesday's game against the Houston Astros after he missed the last five contests with tightness in his right hamstring.
