Jesse Scholtens Steps Up for The White Sox Despite 3-0 Loss
Matt Blewett-USA TODAY Sports

The White Sox matched the Guardian's three runs with only three hits in a 3-0 loss to their division rival. Cleveland's offense needed a wild pitch and a two-run homer to put the South Siders in the loss column on Monday. An injury (wrist inflammation) to starter Mike Clevinger prompted the White Sox to call up Jesse Scholtens from triple-A and use reliever Jimmy Lambert as the game's opener.

Stepping Up

Scholtens, a 29-year-old rookie, made his MLB debut with the White Sox in a loss on April 7th vs. Pittsburgh with three innings of one-run ball in relief.

Scholtens landed with the White Sox after spending his entire pro career in the Padres Organization. Chicago signed him to a minor league deal and non-roster invite in the off-season. After designating Jose Ruiz, the White Sox selected his contract from their triple-A affiliate and added him to the 40-man roster.

The former 9th-round pick's five stellar innings in relief of opener Jimmy Lambert kept the White Sox in most of the game. Scholtens surrendered only one run on a wild pitch, allowing Gabrial Arias to score from third. Arias led off the inning with a walk, advanced to second on a single, and moved up to third when Will Brennan got caught stealing second.

"He pounded the strike zone and made some good pitches when he needed to," said Sox manager Pedro Grifol. "He did a nice job for us. He's a good guy to have around, especially in the minor leagues, in case something like this happens. He can pitch a little bit."

Guardians Insurance

Scholtens retired the final eight hitters he faced after Steve Kwan's lead-off double in the third. Mike Zunino's two-run homer came in the eighth with Arias on first base and Gregory Santos on the mound for the Pale Hose.

Liam Hendriks Update

Liam Hendriks continues inching towards a return to action. The all-star closer threw his second bullpen session and will have another session on Thursday in Detroit. "His slider was really, really good," Grifol said. He's getting really close."
