ICYMI: Astros Rookie Kessinger's First MLB Hit

Houston Astros rookie infielder Grae Kessinger collected his first Major League Baseball hit on Sunday afternoon in Cleveland, garnering a first of many to come as a pro athlete.

Despite Kessinger's efforts on Sunday, the Astros dropped the contest to the Guardians 5-0 and have a much-needed day off on Monday.

Kessinger, who was primarily called up due to his versatility as a backup option for Astros manager Dusty Baker to give his infielders time off, made his MLB debut on June 7 at Toronto.

The 25-year-old was a second round pick in 2019 and is currently slashing .200/.333/.200 through two games (five at-bats) for the Astros.

Through 52 games with Triple-A Sugar Land this season, Kessinger was slashing .284/.400/.443 with six home runs and 32 RBI prior to be called up by Houston.

The Astros (39-31) are currently 3.5 games behind the first-place Texas Rangers (42-27) in the American League West.

Houston returns to the diamond on Saturday at Minute Maid Park against the Cincinnati Reds (35-35), with first pitch slated for 3:10 p.m. CT.

Brandon Bielak (3-3, 4.01 ERA) is slated to take the hill for Houston on Saturday, with Cincinnati countering with right-hander Hunter Greene (1-4, 4.01 ERA).
