Four players the Braves could pursue at the MLB trade deadline

The Atlanta Braves are known for their impressive roster and are in first place in the NL. However, they are currently facing some challenges as they navigate the season. Injuries to key players, particularly in the starting rotation, have put pressure on the bullpen and the outfield production has been inconsistent.

As the Aug. 1 trade deadline approaches, the Braves are looking for solutions to strengthen their team. As they explore potential trade options, it is essential to consider what they can offer in return. With a farm system currently ranked 30th, the Braves trading options are limited, making Shohei Ohtani out of the realm of possibilities. Let's look at the Braves' needs and what they can offer to make it happen.

The most pressing issue for the Braves is their pitching staff. The loss of Max Fried and Kyle Wright to injuries in May has left a void in their rotation and placed a heavy burden on the bullpen. While the bullpen has shown resilience, there is a need for additional support to maintain consistency and alleviate the workload.

RHP Joe Kelly, Chicago White Sox

One potential trade option for Atlanta is Joe Kelly from the Chicago White Sox. Despite the White Sox's disappointing season, Kelly has been performing well and could be a valuable addition to the Braves bullpen. With his impressive two-seam fastball and lethal slider, Kelly brings a combination of power and finesse that could strengthen the team's pitching arsenal. Additionally, his contract situation, the final year of his three-year deal with one club option in 2024 remaining, offers the Braves short-term stability and future flexibility.

LHP Richard Lovelady, Oakland Athletics

Another pitcher the Braves could consider is Richard Lovelady from the Oakland Athletics. Lovelady has proven himself as a reliable left-handed option out of the bullpen, maintaining an impressive 3.06 ERA for the season. His ability to perform under challenging circumstances highlights his potential impact on the Braves pitching staff. Given the Braves' previous trade history with the Athletics, acquiring Lovelady could be a feasible option. An offer of LHP prospect Dylan Dodd and SS Ignacio Alvarez should get the deal done.

The Braves are also looking for solutions to improve their outfield production. While the defense has been solid, they desire more offensive output from their outfielders.

OF Brent Rooker, Oakland Athletics

Brent Rooker, currently with the Oakland Athletics, is a player the Braves could consider for their outfield. Though Rooker's recent performance has declined, his early season success cannot be dismissed. He opened the season by hitting .348 with nine home runs through April. Placing him in a strong, deep lineup like the Braves', could revitalize his offensive production. With the financial flexibility offered by Rooker's arbitration timeline, the Braves could benefit from his potential while maintaining long-term flexibility.

The Braves could include him in the Lovelady deal by adding an additional top-30 prospect; with Sean Murphy locking down the catcher position in Atlanta, catcher Drake Baldwin makes sense for both teams.

OF Joc Pederson, San Francisco Giants

Joc Pederson, known for his significant contribution to the Braves World Series victory in 2021, could be a valuable addition to the outfield. While Pederson has struggled more than usual this season, returning to Atlanta could provide the spark he needs to regain his form. He is slashing .247/.371/.831 with 10 home runs and his defensive versatility and power would enhance the Braves' lineup. With his availability on a rental contract, the Braves can explore this option without long-term commitments. The Giants are still fighting for a playoff spot, so they may not be willing to sell, but an MLB-ready outfielder and set-up man, A.J. Minter, may entice the trade.
