Former Marlins president blasts star CF after criticism of longtime SS

Former Miami Marlins president David Samson blasted Jazz Chisholm Jr. on Wednesday, calling out the star centerfielder for his recent criticism of longtime shortstop Miguel Rojas.

"In the hundreds, if not thousands of players I had in my career, Miguel Rojas is one of the best people I have come across," Samson said. "(Jazz isn't) a team leader. You didn't walk in there as a team leader. The only thing that didn't happen to you is you're lucky that (Jeff) Conine and (Mike) Lowell and some of the other players weren't there when you got there because they would've kicked your a-- and that would've been the end of you."

Samson, who served as Marlins president during their 2003 World Series championship season, added a warning for Chisholm Jr. during his roast.

"It is so unbelievable that (Chisholm Jr.) did this, and there will be ramifications," the 56-year-old. "He's not going to walk into spring training today and everyone's going to be all jolly. That is divisive and it's wrong."

Samson also noted that in Chisholm Jr.'s four-year career, he's only played in more than 100 games once. He claims that the 2022 All-Star only earned the honor of appearing on the cover of "MLB The Show 23" because of "Uncle Derek," referring to ex-Marlins CEO Derek Jeter.

Samson's words come one day after Chisholm Jr. said on "The Pivot" podcast that the beginning of his career in Miami was "the worst three years probably of (his) life."

The 26-year-old didn't specifically name Rojas (now a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers) but alluded to him in his comments.

“I was already a team leader without being called a team leader,” Chisholm said. “You can’t be a team leader when you’ve got guys that’s been in the clubhouse that’s been in there nine or 10 years even though they suck. They’ve been there for nine or 10 years and the team calls them the team captain. But they’re not a good captain, they’re not a good person, you’re not even a good athlete at this point. You’re just here and you’re bringing down the young guys that are supposed to be good.”

Rojas played 870 games with the Marlins from 2015-22.

Chisholm Jr. is one of the game's brightest and most outspoken stars but has rubbed some the wrong way with his excessive flashiness. Injuries have limited the former infielder to 60 and 97 games over the last two seasons, respectively, after playing in a career-high 124 contests in 2021.

Samson has spent plenty of time in the headlines since leaving the organization, including in February when he slammed Jeter for his actions during his time as CEO of the franchise.
