Former Cardinals Superstar Wants To Become MLB Manager In Near Future

The St. Louis Cardinals lost a well-known member of their coaching staff prior to the season but the young coach is not ready to hang up the uniform just yet.

"While former All-Star outfielder Matt Holliday changed his mind this spring and told the St. Lous Cardinals he no longer wanted to be their bench coach, he is now telling friends that he is interested in becoming a major-league manager in the next few years," USA Today's Bob Nightengale wrote Sunday.

Holliday's run as bench coach for St. Louis lasted just months, as he stepped down for family reasons prior to the season's start. 

However, he was a volunteer coach for Oklahoma State and has a strong résumé of coaching his own family tree.

Jackson Holliday -- his son, is the No. 1 prospect in Major League Baseball and appears to be a generational talent. The 19-year-old already has reached Triple-A after tearing through multiple levels this season.

Jackson's younger brother Ethan is in the class of 2025 and many deem him the best player in the family. If Holliday can get the most out of his own lineage, he should be able to aid others who also have the physical tools to be productive big leaguers. 

If Holliday were to work himself into the big leagues, we could soon see him follow in Coach Prime's footsteps -- Deion Sanders coaches two of his sons for the Colorado Boulders -- a Div. 1 football program that is off to a hot start. 

While his sons' success adds to Holliday's allure, he was a fantastic player in his own right. The 15-year veteran hit .299 with 816 extra-base hits including 316 home runs, 1220 RBIs and a .889 OPS (132 OPS+) in 1903 games. The seven-time All-Star won four Silver Sluggers, a batting title and was a big part of the Cardinals 2011 World Series Championship.

It'll be interesting to follow his journey over the next few seasons. If Oli Marmol produces similar results next season, we could see Holliday back in a Cardinals uniform.
