Mike Shildt likely to become next manager of the San Diego Padres
San Diego Padres senior advisor to player development & major leagues Mike Shildt Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

MLB Rumors: The San Diego Padres allowed their manager Bob Melvin to interview for a manager opening within their division.  It is now believed that he will become the next skipper of that team, which is the San Francisco Giants.

If true this will leave the Padres without a manager.  Two MLB Insiders, Bob Nightengale and Dennis Lin, have indicated that the Padres will hire internally for their next captain. Two names being mentioned are former St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Shildt and former infielder Ryan Flaherty.

Former St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Shildt has a strong chance to manage the San Diego Padres.

In 2021 Mike Shildt was surprisingly fired by the Cardinals despite making three consecutive postseason appearances.  Philosophical differences were the primary reason why he was dismissed.  Upon leaving St. Louis he joined the Padres where in 2023 he served as their senior advisor to player development.

As manager of the Cardinals Mike Shildt had a 252-199 record and did make an appearance in the National League Championship Series.  His experience may give him an upper hand when the Padres think about who to hire next.

If Mike Shildt is not chosen for the Padres opening it is possible that he could look to manage elsewhere.  Earlier in the season he was linked to the New York Mets.  It will be interesting to see if he gets another opportunity or not in 2024.
