Detroit Tigers Provide Mixed Bag of Injury News on Monday Regarding Young Pitcher, Outfielder

On Monday morning, the Detroit Tigers provided a mix bag of injury results out of spring training. There's good news on outfielder Riley Greene but disappointing news on pitcher Sawyer Gipson-Long.

First, with regards to Greene: He is scheduled to face live pitching this week and is completing all other baseball activities as he recovers from Tommy John surgery in his non-throwing elbow.

As far as Gipson-Long goes, he's dealing with left groin discomfort from a bullpen last week. He has a groin strain.

The 23-year-old Greene battled multiple injuries in 2023 and only played in 99 games, but he did play quite well when healthy. He hit .288 with 11 homers and 37 RBI while also stealing seven bases. Along with Spencer Torkelson, he makes up a solid young core of position players for manager A.J. Hinch.

He made his major league debut in 2022 and owns a .271/.335/.739 slash line with 16 home runs.

As for Gipson-Long, he's 26-years-old and was a sixth-round pick of the Minnesota Twins in 2019. He made his major league debut last year and went 1-0 in four games with a 2.70 ERA. This injury won't help him the starting rotation as he battles with Jack Flaherty, Kenta Maeda, Casey Mize, Tarik Skubal and Matt Manning.

The Tigers finished second in the American League Central in 2023 and are seeking a big jump this year. They've added Flaherty, Maeda and Mark Canha to their roster.

Detroit opens up the season on March 28 against the Chicago White Sox.
