Cubs trade for reliever Sean Newcomb in deal with Braves

The Chicago Cubs have acquired left-handed relief pitcher Sean Newcomb from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for right-handed reliever Jesse Chavez and cash considerations.

In three appearances this season for Atlanta, Newcomb has allowed four runs off seven hits with a 7.20 ERA in five innings pitched. 

The 28-year-old Newcomb was the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim's first-round draft pick in 2014. Before playing his first major league game, Newcomb was traded in 2015 to Atlanta in a deal that included Andrelton Simmons.

In six seasons with Atlanta, Newcomb went 24-23 with a 4.25 ERA in 383.1 innings pitched. 

Meanwhile, the 38-year-old Chavez has made three appearances for the Cubs this season. Chavez has allowed four runs off seven hits with a 6.35 ERA in 5.2 innings. 

Chavez has played 15 seasons in MLB for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Atlanta Braves, Kansas City Royals, Toronto Blue Jays, Oakland A's, Los Angeles Dodgers, Angels, Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs. 

This will be Chavez's third stint with Atlanta; he spent 2010 and 2021 with the Braves. Last season, Chavez went 3-2 with a 2.14 ERA in 30 appearances for Atlanta.
