Cubs reliever Steve Cishek carted off field with injury before game
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Chicago Cubs relief pitcher Steve Cishek was just going through his pre-game work ahead of Wednesday’s road game against the Colorado Rookies at Coors Field.

That’s when an errant ball hit Cishek in the shin, forcing him to be carted off the field.

We’ve seen some freak injuries around baseball in recent years. But this might take the cake.

There’s no further information on the severity of the injury or where the ball might have come from. Given Cishek couldn’t walk off the diamond under his own power, that can’t be seen as a good thing.

The veteran reliever is pitching to a 3.21 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 29 appearances this season. He’s struck out 30 batters in 28 innings.

He’s also saved six games for a Cubs team that has struggled out of the bullpen on the season. This could be a major blow for the team.
