Cubs Place Edwin Rios on IL, Recall Michael Rucker
Rich Storry-USA TODAY Sports

Earlier today the Chicago Cubs announced that they placed infielder Edwin Rios on the injured list retroactive to a left groin strain he suffered on June 4.

Picked up by the Cubs this past offseason, fans were hoping Rios could show some of the power swinging promise he displayed in 2020. So far, the lefty has been in a slump. In 28 at-bats he holds a .071/.235/.214 slash line with one home run and two RBI.

Maybe Rios' production so far this season is related to his injury, and a stint on the IL could be a blessing in disguise for him. Either way, the Cubs could really use production from the left side of the plate.

Cubs Recall Rucker

With Rios’ move to the IL, the Cubs recalled right-handed reliever Michael Rucker to the roster.

In 20 games so far this season, Rucker holds a 5.48 ERA with 25 strikeouts, nine walks, a 1.739 WHIP, and a 4.24 FIP in 23 innings pitched.

The Cubs continue their west-coast road trip tonight against the Los Angeles Angels. Right-hander Jameson Taillon takes the ball for the Cubs and battles against Jaime Barria.
