Cincinnati Reds Lose Valuable Member of Starting Rotation For Rest of Season to Injury

As the Cincinnati Reds come down to the wire this season, they'll have to chase the playoffs without starting pitcher Graham Ashcraft, who is out for the rest of the season because of a toe injury.

Per Reds reporter Gordon Wittemyer in an article on Cincinnati.com:

Right-hander Graham Ashcraft, who went on the injured list two weeks ago hopeful for a long-shot return from the stress reaction in his right big toe, is scheduled for season-ending surgery Tuesday.

Hunter Greene is the only remaining member of the Opening Day rotation that is healthy right now, and even he missed a significant portion of the season with injury as well.

The 25-year-old finishes the year at 7-9 with a 4.76 ERA in 26 games. He struck out 111 batters in 145.2 innings. He had a 2.58 ERA over his final 12 starts and was helping the Reds push for their first playoff berth since 2020.

The Reds enter play on Sunday at 78-72 and tied with the Arizona Diamondbacks for the third and final wild card spot in the National League. They are also only 0.5 games ahead of the Miami Marlins for that spot as the race comes down to the wire.

They will finish out a series with the New York Mets on Sunday afternoon. First pitch from Citi Field is scheduled for 1:40 p.m. ET.

Rookie left-hander Brandon Williamson (CIN) will pitch against veteran lefty Jose Quintana (NYM).

Williamson is 4-4 with a 4.47 ERA while Quintana is 2-5 with a 3.05 ERA.
