Baltimore Orioles Promote Another Top Prospect to Big Leagues
USA TODAY Sports

The Baltimore Orioles, owners of one of the best farm systems in all of baseball, are promoting No. 2 prospect Colton Cowser to the big league squad. He's ranked No. 14 in all of baseball.

This follows the recent promotion of No. 3 prospect Jordan Westburg.

The following update comes from the Rotowire fantasy baseball portal:

The Orioles selected Cowser's contract from Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.

ANALYSIS
Reports of Cowser's impending arrival came out Tuesday and the young outfielder has now officially been added to the big-league roster. He earned the call-up after putting up a .330/.459/.537 with 10 homers and 40 RBI through 257 plate appearances with Norfolk. Cowser is capable of playing all three outfield spots and should see regular starts -- at least against right-handers -- between the outfield and perhaps some at designated hitter.

The 23-year-old left-handed hitter was selected in the first round (No. 5 overall) by the Orioles in the 2021 draft out of Sam Houston State.

More on Cowser is available from this portion of his MLB.com prospect profile:

A 6-foot-3 left-handed hitter, Cowser combines an outstanding swing, bat speed and good plate discipline to make him a dangerous all-around hitter. He was known more as a hit-over-power type, but the pop is very real and showed up in his first full season. He understands the strike zone, leading to 94 walks in 2022, but there was also more swing-and-miss to his game than anticipated. He struggled with softer stuff at the upper levels, with a 44 percent miss rate on breaking stuff, though that didn’t keep him from driving the ball to all fields.

The Orioles are currently 49-35 and 6.0 games back in the American League East. They own the top spot currently in the wild card race.

The O's will take on the Yankees on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. ET.
