Austin Voth suffered broken nose on hit-by-pitch to face

Washington Nationals manager Dave Martinez announced Austin Voth suffered a broken nose after taking a 90 miles per hour fastball to the face Sunday against the Philadelphia Phillies. Voth will remain in Philadelphia to have his nose reset.

Voth received the spot start Sunday in place of the injured Stephen Strasburg, who went on the 10-day IL with a neck ailment. He had pitched two perfect innings when he came up to the plate in the third inning.

He squared to bunt when a fastball got away from Vince Velasquez, hitting Voth in the face. Voth started bleeding from the nose immediately.

Voth exited the game after being attended to by trainers. Joe Ross replaced him as a pinch-runner. Wander Suero took his place on the mound after the inning.

Voth was the second of two straight batters Velasquez hit. He also got Victor Robles on the arm. A timetable for Voth’s recovery is expected to be announced after the procedure to reset his nose.
