Marc Staal Returning to Red Wings on a One-Year Extension

We reported a couple of days ago that the Staal brothers (Eric and Marc) wanted to continue playing in the NHL this coming season and would be looking to sign new deals. One-half of the brother duo has reportedly taken care of some business as the Detroit Red Wings are bringing back Marc Staal on a one-year contract, according to Bob McKenzie of TSN.

The team confirmed McKenzie’s report just minutes later and Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff reports that the deal is worth $2 million and includes a full no-movement clause.

McKenzie broke the story while also confirming that he would be working free agency day on Wednesday, but financial details have not been confirmed by the organization. If the $2 million is accurate, it’s not a massive contract and fair value as Staal has become a depth defender in the NHL and more of a veteran leader helping usher in young prospects. That said, his underlying numbers are not good.

Staal offered the Red Wings some decent minutes after being acquired from the New York Rangers in a cap clearing deal for New York. He’s been a good, experienced mentor to players like Mortiz Seider, Filip Hronek, and Gustav Lindstrom.

We’ll update with more details as they become available. Staal is likely to hit the 1,000 game mark this season, which is an admirable feat. It is possible he’s traded at the NHL deadline if the Red Wings are not in the hunt as his contract is friendly enough that a competitive team might want to use him in a depth role.
