Sam Greene/The Enquirer / USA TODAY NETWORK

Julie Ertz, a two-time Women’s World Cup winner, played her last game for the United States in a friendly match against South Africa, which ended with a 3-0 victory.

A Glorious Career: Two-Time Women’s World Cup Winner

Ertz had announced her retirement a month ago after a 10-year career. She began the game against South Africa, wearing the captain’s armband for her 123rd appearance for the United States.

Lynn Williams Shines with Two Goals

Lynn Williams scored two goals in the first half, securing the victory for the U.S. Ertz left the field to a standing ovation from the TQL Stadium crowd in the 35th minute, shortly after Trinity Rodman’s goal, which made it 2-0.

The two teams will face off again on Sunday at Soldier Field in Chicago. This match will also mark the retirement of Megan Rapinoe.

USWNT’s Post-World Cup Return

This was the United States’ first game since their exit from the Women’s World Cup in the Round of 16 this summer, where they were eliminated by Sweden in a penalty shootout, marking their earliest exit from the top soccer tournament.

Ertz’s Decision to Retire and Spend Time with Family

Ertz, who is 31 years old, had hinted at her retirement following the loss to Sweden and made it official in August. She emphasized her desire to spend time with her son and husband, Zach Ertz, who plays as a tight end for the Arizona Cardinals.

She said, “I feel like I’ve been so blessed to have the career that I’ve had,” and expressed her gratitude for being able to retire on her own terms.

Ertz’s Remarkable Comeback Journey

Ertz’s return to soccer was uncertain, especially after a knee injury and the birth of her son last year. However, she made a comeback, playing in friendlies against Ireland in April and signing with Angel City in the National Women’s Soccer League.

Versatile Role in National and Club Teams

Known for her versatility, Ertz played as a center-back in the 2015 World Cup-winning U.S. team and as a defensive midfielder in the 2019 title defense. She leaves her national team career with 20 goals and started in all 17 of her World Cup matches.

Ertz scored six goals in 95 games with the NWSL’s Chicago Red Stars from 2014 to 2021. She also played three games for Angel City this season, scoring one goal.
