Former Browns Safety Karl Joseph Visits With Steelers

That is a bit of an odd move from a Steelers team that has two reliable safeties.

Nonetheless, it sounds like Pittsburgh is interested in bringing in a veteran option such as Joseph.

Joseph’s 2020 Campaign

The 27-year-old safety was originally selected by the Las Vegas Raiders in the first round during the 2016 draft.

He spent four seasons with the Raiders, but the organization decided to decline his fifth-year option.

Joseph put together some decent seasons with the Raiders, but injuries limited his time on the field.

However, he did make an impact when he was healthy enough to suit up.

The Browns needed safety help and decided to give Joseph a one-year deal.

It wasn’t a bad move by the team and Joseph did bounce back in Cleveland.

Through 14 games, Joseph finished with 67 tackles, four passes defended, and one interception.

He only started in eight games for Cleveland, but the injuries quickly piled up, so Joseph certainly saw plenty of time on the field.

After the season, the two sides decided to part ways, but it sounds like Cleveland might be seeing more of Joseph in 2021.

Joining The Enemy?

On paper. Joseph doesn’t really fit on the Steelers roster for the upcoming season.

Pittsburgh has All-Pro free safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and strong safety Terrell Edmunds.

Both players will be full-time starters, so Joseph wouldn’t even have a chance to compete for a starting position in Pittsburgh.

Although, the Steelers could be seeking depth with Sean Davis and Jordan Dangerfield both in free agency.

They don’t have any other reliable options at safety, so Joseph could provide a veteran presence and reliable depth.

It’s surprising that Joseph is considering taking a backup role after putting up decent numbers in Cleveland last season.

Although, it’s unclear what other offers he has on the table, so maybe this is the best decision for him.

Life Without Joseph

It doesn’t appear that the Browns have any interest in bringing back Joseph in 2021.

Hopefully, last year’s second-round pick Grant Delpit will be healthy and ready to make an impact in Cleveland.

He is expected to take over the starting free safety spot, while John Johnson III starts alongside him.

Johnson is one of the most underrated safeties in the league and an enormous upgrade for this Browns defense.

Behind them, Ronnie Harrison will serve as their primary backup, which Cleveland should feel confident in his abilities.

Honestly, there is really no reason for the Browns to consider bringing back Joseph with Johnson on the roster.

Best of luck to him as he does deserve a spot on a roster where he can play a significant role.

Possibly, Joseph will sign with the Steelers and the Browns can see him twice next season.
