Michigan State football may be in the market for another priority cornerback and new transfer Ed Woods can help.

If you’ve been following Michigan State football transfer news this week, hats off to you. It’s nearly impossible to keep up with all the portal entrants and commits but if you’re still on top of the news, that’s impressive.

Even if you are on top of everything, it’s tough to really know the connections that some of these transfers have.

Recent transfer commit Ed Woods from Arizona State actually has one of the more interesting connections of any player currently associated with Michigan State. He committed to the Spartans on Tuesday but one of his high school teammates is also a Jonathan Smith target: Jay’Vion Cole.

Cole, a sophomore cornerback from San Jose State, had an impressive 2023 season with 38 tackles, three tackles for loss, a sack, 13 pass breakups, and three interceptions. He transferred to San Jose State from Cal Poly.

Now he’s back in the portal and Michigan State is getting a visit from him next weekend.

And Woods is putting his recruiting cap on.

Cole was clearly excited for his friend after he committed to Michigan State on Tuesday and posted about in on Twitter. Woods responded with a “You next” tweet right back at Cole. There’s a connection here that might just help Michigan State over competitors like Auburn and Texas. Tennessee and Houston also offered this week so beating these programs out for a top cornerback won’t be easy.

The confidence has to be there for Smith and Co. to land Cole especially since the Spartans just beat out Alabama for Woods. If he can beat Alabama for a top cornerback transfer, he can definitely win a recruitment over Texas, Tennessee, and Auburn.

Woods might end up being the difference in this recruitment. Smith is playing chess while everyone else plays checkers.
