DECOMMIT: Michigan State's 2024 Quarterback Pledge Reopens Recruitment
USA TODAY Sports

Michigan State's football program has suffered a significant set back after a disastrous ending to the Mel Tucker era, and the repercussions are still being felt.

On Friday, the Spartans suffered their seventh decommitment from their 2024 recruiting class since Tucker was fired in late September. Three-star Westwood (Mass.) Xaverian Brothers quarterback Henry Hasselbeck, son of longtime NFL quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, announced via Twitter that he would reopen his recruitment.

Michigan State introduced new head coach Jonathan Smith on Monday. Since then, the program has seen all three of its 2023 scholarship quarterbacks — Noah Kim, Katin Houser and Sam Leavitt — enter the transfer portal. Now, MSU has lost its quarterback commit from its 2024 recruiting class.

With that being said, Hasselbeck said he's talked with new Michigan State offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Brian Lindgren, whom Smith brought with him to East Lansing from Oregon State, and Hasselbeck will continue to consider the Spartans as an option going forward.

Hasselbeck originally committed to Michigan State back on June 30, after previously being committed to play lacrosse at Maryland. The 6-foot-3, 165-pounder began receiving more interest as a football prospect this past summer, picking up offers from Pittsburgh, Boston College and Arizona in addition to MSU. A three-star prospect, Hasselbeck is considered the No. 1211 overall prospect, No. 66 quarterback and No. 6 player from the state of Massachusetts, according to 247Sports' composite rankings.

With the decommitment of Hasselbeck, Michigan State's 2024 recruiting class is down to seven verbal commitments and has fallen to No. 103 in the country — dead-last in the Big Ten. The Spartans have previously lost pledges from four-star cornerback Jamari Howard (prior to Tucker's firing), four-star safety Reggie Powers, four-star running back Anthony Carrie, four-star interior offensive lineman Andrew Dennis, three-star cornerbacks Camren Campbell and Syair Torrence and three-star offensive tackle Logan Bennett.
