Broncos bringing in former Rice WR Luke McCaffrey for visit
Vasha Hunt - USA TODAY

The Denver Broncos are hosting former Rice wide receiver Luke McCaffrey on a visit ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft, as was originally reported by Mike Klis of KUSA-TV.

It was previously reported the Broncos "had dealings with" McCaffrey at the Combine, according to the Denver Gazette‘s Chris Tomasson.

McCaffrey, who projects as a mid-round prospect, could be an asset to the receiver corps in Denver after he finished out the 2023 season with 71 receptions for 992 yards and 13 touchdowns.

That came just one season after the Owls product reeled in 58 catches for 723 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Before Rice, McCaffrey served as a backup quarterback for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He ultimately changed positions, something that was done purely by his own choice.

“When I switched positions, it was a time in my life where I kind of opened myself up to a different world," McCaffrey told me this offseason. "I was so thankful because I felt like I got to be myself a whole lot more.”

And the impact he had at that spot was priceless for Rice.

“I feel like at the receiver position, it’s hard to be 10 percent of someone’s offense,” Owls head coach Mike Bloomgren said. “And I feel like he was 40 percent of ours.

McCaffrey is the son of former Broncos wide receiver Ed McCaffrey, who won three Super Bowls, and the brother of San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey. His oldest Brother, Max, also saw action as a wide receiver in the NFL and XFL before going into coaching.

His mother, Lisa, was a soccer player for the Stanford Cardinal and his grandfather, Dave Sime, won a silver medal in the 100-meter dash at the 1960 Olympics.

It will be interesting to see if McCaffrey ultimately ends up suiting up for the same team as his father when Denver is officially on the clock in April.
